Freeway Navigation: Safe Driving & Route Management

1. Entering the Freeway

Use the Acceleration Lane: Match the speed of flowing traffic before merging. Use your turn signal early to indicate your intent.
Find a Gap: Check your mirrors and look over your shoulder (blind spot check) to locate a safe gap in traffic. Never stop in the acceleration lane unless traffic is completely blocked ahead.
Yield Properly: Yield to traffic already on the highway, as they have the right-of-way, but maintain a smooth and assertive merge.

Lane Selection: Keep right except to pass. Use center and left lanes primarily for passing or heavy multi-lane congestion.
Speed Matching: Keep pace with surrounding traffic while staying strictly within legal speed limits. Avoid sudden braking or erratic lane changes.
Space Cushion: Maintain a minimum 3-to-4-second following distance behind the vehicle ahead. Increase this buffer during inclement weather, low visibility, or heavy traffic.

The 4-Step Mirror & Signal Check:
1. Check your rearview mirror.
2. Check your side-view mirror.
3. Check your blind spot with a quick head check.
4. Signal your intention well in advance.
Smooth Execution: Move decisively into the target lane without cutting off other drivers or slowing down abruptly.

Plan Ahead: Identify your exit at least one mile in advance. Check highway signs and confirm your lane position early.
Signal Early: Turn on your indicator approximately 100 feet (or 3–5 seconds) before reaching the deceleration lane.
Decelerate Safely: Do not slow down while still on the main freeway lanes. Move entirely into the deceleration lane first, then reduce your speed to match surface street limits.
